Letters to S.S. McClure and "Dear Sir", 1894 July 16, September 11.

In the July 16th letter, Sherard writes that he has received McClure's letter of the 6th about the Napoleon article and feels there is some misunderstanding. He has written to McClure's brother about Jaccace's whereabouts. Daudet had told him that Jaccace had moved to Harper's. Sherard is prepared to write the article on Napoleon; the subject has not been out of his mind for the past eight months. There is a problem, in that he has rented a house near Biarritz, and had planned to go the following week for about a month. Sherard asks about terms; he does not wish to lose the rights to the essay and might like to publish it later on in book form. For honorarium he would like 20 dollars a thousand words, the same he received for his Daudet, Zola, and Verne articles and notes that he would have to keep up two houses. He would like payment of half now and half on October 1st. If the terms suit, McClure should wire "Yes" and if not, "No" so that he may go on with his holiday plans. Sherard will wait until the 26th for his reply. He concludes that Daudet was pleased with article about him in McClure's. In the September 11th letter to an unknown recipient (possibly S.S. McClure), Sherard writes about articles he has written about Napoleon and their unsuitability for the needs of the person who requested them. He is willing to rewrite if he hears back by wire with guidelines for the length of the article. Sherard also requests payment "for the time I have lost over this work" and for payment he needs to make to a bookseller who is charging him for books he "will take."
